Television is the most important medium of the late twentieth century. The aim of this one-day conference is to examine the current state of access, to investigate ways in which access might be improved, and to demonstrate the use of televisual material in research and teaching.

Part One-The Present: An examination of the current state of access to televisual archives. Steve Bryant (Keeper of Television, National Film and Television Archive, London)-"The value and use of television archives, now and in the future": Michael Crick (broadcaster and biographer)-"The arrogance and negligenceof British broadcasters": Bert Hogenkamp (Stichting film en Wetenschap,Amsterdam)-"International perspectives": Jean Seaton (Center for Communication and Information Studies, University of Westminster)-"The politics of getting access": Gill Shepherd (Director, Wide Vision Productions)-"Using Archives in Documentaries": Howard Smith (Institute of Communication Studies, University of Leeds)-"Researching and teaching": Glyn Williams (History Department, Queen Mary and Westfield College, London)-"The digitalisation of television archives."

Part Two-The Future: A general round tablediscussion to consider recomendations for ways of improving access for teaching and research purposes. Opportunities willbe given for comments from the floor on problems of access.
