NEW DIRECTIONS IN B. C. HISTORY

University of Northern British Columbia Prince George 26-29 May 1995

The New Directions in British Columbia History Conference will be a forum for addressing new methodologies, new theoretical approaches, and new subjects. Conference sessions will also follow a variety of formats to allow for maximum discussion and interaction.

SESSIONS -------- FRIDAY 26 MAY

6:30-8:00 p.m. Registration and reception

8:00-10:00 p.m. *Who killed William Robinson? Participants: Ruth Sandwell and John Lutz.

SATURDAY 27 MAY AND SUNDAY 28 MAY

*The New History of the American West and British Columbia History. Participants: Richard Maxwell Brown and Robin Fisher.

*Seeing Is Believing? Visual Culture and the Historian. Participants: Brian Low, Sylvia Van Kirk, Carol Williams.

*Environmental History. Participants: Bruce Sadfield and David Dendy.

*Constructions of Race and Masculinity Participants: Pasi Ahonen and Susan Johnston.

*Exploring the Voice: A Workshop on Oral History and the Practising Historian. Participants: Lesley Cooper, Theresa Healy, Shirley Sterling, Wendy Wickwire.

*Whither Labour History? Participants: Mark Leier, Todd McCallum and Andy Parnaby.

*Popular History and Academics. Participants: Ken Coates and Ken Drushka.

*The New Archives. Participants: Patrick Dunae and Lynne Tibbitt.

*Reading the Past: Interdisciplinary Approaches to Historical Text. Participants: Mary-Ellen Kelm, Julia Emberley, Jon Swainger, David del Mar, Marcelle Gareau, Margaret Anderson.

*Archives and Freedom of Information Participants: David Flaherty, David Mitchell, Douglas Cole.

*The Culture of Food: A Banquet Presentation. Participants: Sylvia Olsen and Leslie Sutton.

MONDAY 29 MAY

An excursion to Fort St. James, one of the oldest fur trading locations in British Columbia and site of a National Historic Park.

Those who register for the conference before 1 May will be sent a package of pre-conference reading. A number of the sessions will be based on the assumption that many in the audience will have read this material in advance.
