An international Society for Research into the History of the German-Language Theatre Abroad
ANNOUNCEMENT
The society conceives of "Abroad" as countries beyond the borders of Germany and Austria, where German-speaking troupes or groups played or founded theatres, whether in Riga, Buenos Aires, Paris, Montreal, Calcutta, Prague, San Francisco, New York, St. Petersburg or Moscow. An additional aim of THALIA GERMANICA is to encourage research into the history of the German-language theatre as part of the theatre history of individual countries.
The society also publishes a newsletter between conferences about new research, publications, conferences and live theatre performances in German.
We invite interested scholars from all countries in which there once were or still are German theatres to participate in a conference 12 - 14 June 1995 to be held in the prestigious City Archives in Tallinn, Estonia. The deadline for announced papers with a one page abstract is 15 March 1995.
The theme is: "Die Anfaenge eines deutschsprachigen Theaters im Ausland." Papers may treat this theme from the period of the Wanderbuehne to the present day in whatever country German-language theatre was played or is still played. Papers may be in English or German; half an hour will be schedule for oral delivery, with fifteen minutes for discussion. The written paper may be longer.
Selected papers will be published in a Proceedings of the conference. For this purpose, all papers should be in their final camera-ready form on disk and in hard copy and should be handed in at the conference.
Annual membership dues in the society are US$20 per year for scholars in Western countries. A US $ money order or bank draft is the preferred payment method. Dues for scholars in E. Europe and former SU republics are waived at present. Please share this information with persons interested in Theatre History, Archival History the History of German Literature, and German-language theatres.
