Lecture: Debating Difference and Gendered Violence in Nordic Welfare States, University of Turku, March 15, 2011

The project “Multiculturalism as a New Pathway to Incorporation”, funded by the Academy of Finland, offers again public lectures related to the concept of multiculturalism and its policies and practices carried on in various social and cultural environments.

Tuesday, March 15, 14-16

Suvi Keskinen, Dr. Soc. Sci., Adjunct Professor, Post Doctoral Researcher, Turku Institute for Advanced Studies:

“Debating Difference and Gendered Violence in Nordic Welfare States”

Place: Tempo Meeting Room, Minerva, 2nd floor, Kaivokatu 12 (T52)

The lecture discusses how questions of gender equality and gendered violence are used in public debates about immigration and multiculturalism, as part of what has been called the current ‘crisis of multiculturalism’ or the ‘backlash against difference’. It analyses how topics such as forced marriages, honour-related violence and ‘gang rapes’ are used, especially by anti-immigration activists and radical right populist politicians, to construct dichotomous divisions based on ethnicity, ‘race’ and gender.

The lecture is open to the public. No registration is required. The lecture is part of the seminar on multiculturalism, a multidisciplinary seminar for researchers and students of history, sociology, and other fields of study.
