The project “Multiculturalism as a New Pathway to Incorporation”, funded by the Academy of Finland, offers again public lectures related to the concept of multiculturalism and its policies and practices carried on in various social and cultural environments.
Tuesday, March 8, 14-16
Filio Degni, Ph.D., Senior Researcher, Department of Public Health, University of Turku: “Integration vs. Multiculturalism”
Place: Tempo Meeting Room, Minerva, 2nd floor, Kaivokatu 12 (T52)
The lecture examines how societies deal with a culturally diverse citizenry today. Many religions and cultural practices and traditions are now seen side by side in many countries and cities. Should those societies and cities integrate these cultures into one national life-style? Or should they, instead, keep them separate from national cultural practices and traditions? Another school of thought is multiculturalism; the idea that a society is strong enough to accommodate numerous cultures within it. From this presentation, while we participate in a pros and cons debate, we will try to define the role of the state in national socio-cultural, economic, and healthcare discussions that the concepts of integration and multiculturalism have in recent years contributed to in many Western societies.
Please also note the upcoming lecture:
