Professor Peter Kivisto (Augustana College, Rock Island, IL), the Finland Distinguished Professor at the University of Turku, holds two open lectures this spring as part of the interdisciplinary project “Multiculturalism as a New Pathway to Incorporation”.
The first lecture, “Scholarly Publishing”, is designed for graduate students seeking to get published in peer-reviewed academic journals. There will be one general meeting on Wednesday, February 23, at which time Prof. Kivisto will provide an overview of the publishing process and points on what needs to be considered in getting a paper ready for submission. After that meeting, Prof. Kivisto will arrange to meet with students one-on-one to discuss their papers.
The second lecture, titled “The Role of Culture in Multiculturalism”, on Monday, February 28, will explore a new phase in the short history of multiculturalism, one in which those prepared to defend multiculturalism have begun to engage in an internal critique. Nowhere is this more evident than in the current rethinking of the significance of culture in multiculturalism, reflected in particular in Anne Phillips’ Multiculturalism without Culture. This talk will argue that rather than conceiving of multiculturalism without culture, we should instead determine how culture should be properly understood.
