NATIONAL PERIPHERIES / BORDERLANDS

Time: 22.1. - 19.2.1995, Mondays & Tuesdays 12 am - 2 pm (exceptionally on Thursday 1 February at the same time).

Place: Renvall Institute of Historical Research (Vuorikatu 6 A 4) Common Room.

Target group: Advanced/higher degree students of history, art history, geography etc.

The course corresponds 1 credit. To pass the course an essay on agreed topic is required, based on lectures and literature. The course is directed by Dr Maunu Häyrynen.

The course deals with the concept of "national landscape" and its significance in Finnish nation-building, concentrating on the particular role of peripheral or border areas in the demarcation of national space. Different cases of national periphery are d iscussed. Emphasis is laid on the cultural transformation of 'Otherness' to the basis of national self-definition in successive stages.
